WoW Forever Shaman Guide: Totems, Talents, Specs & Best Builds

By Updated · first published

Shamans are one of the biggest quality-of-life winners in World of Warcraft: Forever. Totems are easier to manage, weapon imbues last an hour, and every spec gains a signature spell. This guide starts with the basics and gets more detailed as it goes.

A Dwarf Shaman on the WoW Forever character creation screen

Beta information, last checked 11 October 2026. The beta is capped at level 30 (level 20 for some of the older build advice below), and Blizzard says abilities and talents may keep changing. Anything for levels 30 to 60 is untested.

Shaman basics

Shamans work with the elements (earth, fire, water and air), not the divine, and bring balance to their chaos. They place totems on the ground to support allies or hinder enemies.

| Roles | Healer or damage, melee or ranged | | Resources | Health and mana | | Armour | Mail and shields | | Group role | Blizzard calls them among the sturdiest classes, but they lack effective crowd control and rely on allies for it. They are always welcome in groups. |

Races

FactionRaces
HordeOrc, Tauren, Troll, Windshaper Skyborne
AllianceDwarf only (new in Forever)

Guide sites rate Orc as the reference pick, as Blood Fury adds attack power and spell power. The Skyborne’s Wind Blessed haste suits casters. Dwarf racials are among the weakest for PvE, and the gaps between the Horde picks are small. More in our racials guide and Skyborne guide.

Talents

  • Talents start at level 10, with one-point milestone talents at 11, 21 and 31 points plus a new 16-point milestone.
  • You can change talents (including Legacy talents) at a class trainer in a major city.
  • Dual Specialisation unlocks at level 40.
  • Early beta tier ratings from foreverguide.eu at level 20: Elemental and Enhancement tier A, Restoration tier B.

Totem changes

Totems got the most attention in Blizzard’s deep dive.

  • All totems have a 1.0 second global cooldown (was 1.5).
  • Totems that give a persistent buff last 5 minutes (was 2).
  • A new totem tracker shows active totems and their time left. Right-click to unsummon.
  • Resistance totems now cover the whole raid.
  • Tranquil Air Totem is removed.
  • Fire Nova Totem is removed. The new Fire Nova spell erupts at your current Fire totem and can be triggered repeatedly (foreverguide lists it at level 12, hitting very hard at low level).

Call of the Elements and friends

AbilityLevelWhat it does
Call of the Elements20Unlocks the totem bar: a preset set of four totems (one per element), summoned together with a 3 second cast for the combined mana cost.
Call of the Spirits30A second preset set.
Call of the Ancestors40A third preset set.
Totemic Recall20Destroys your totems and refunds 25% of their mana.
Totemic Projection22Teleports all your totems up to 30 yards. 1 minute cooldown, 25% of base mana.

Blizzard’s post gives the levels 30 and 40 sets in that order. foreverguide.eu lists them the other way round, so we follow Blizzard.

Blizzard said the Totemic Recall mana refund was bugged in the beta. The 1 October development notes list it as fixed (“Totemic Recall was not restoring Mana”), so it should now work.

Weapon imbues and group buffs

  • Frostbrand, Flametongue, Rockbiter and Windfury Weapon last 60 minutes (was 5) and stack with temporary enchants such as sharpening stones, weightstones and wizard oil.
  • Windfury Totem is now a party-wide buff rather than a weapon enchant. A Shaman using Windfury Weapon doesn’t benefit, and it doesn’t stack with Grace of Air or Flametongue Totem.
  • Flametongue Totem is also a party-wide buff. A Shaman with Flametongue Weapon doesn’t benefit, and it doesn’t stack with Windfury Totem.
  • foreverguide lists Windfury Totem at level 32 and Flametongue Totem at level 28, and says “every melee group will want a Shaman”.

Other spell changes: Lightning Bolt (rank 4 and up) cast time drops from 3 s to 2.5 s, and Chain Lightning from 2.5 s to 2 s. Their spell power coefficients were lowered to match. foreverguide notes base spell damage is lower than Classic without spell power. The 8 October development notes also rebalanced Lightning Bolt’s ranks 1 to 5 so each new rank is an upgrade.

Elemental

The ranged damage spec.

  • Lava Burst (31-point talent): 2.5 s cast, +20% damage if the target has your Flame Shock, 10 s cooldown. The 24 September notes raised ranks 1 and 2 to about 10% more base damage than the Lightning Bolt learned around the same level.
  • Lightning Overload (row 5): a chance for a free extra Lightning Bolt or Chain Lightning at half damage, with no threat.
  • Earthbound (21-point): Earthbind Totem instantly roots nearby targets for 5 s.
  • Call of Thunder is now the 16-point talent (+3% crit on Lightning Bolt and Chain Lightning) and needs Elemental Alacrity.
  • Elemental Alacrity (was Lightning Mastery): 3 points, -0.5 s cast on Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning and Lava Burst.
  • Eye of the Storm: pushback resistance on those three spells, now useful outside PvP.
  • Convection also discounts Lava Burst, Call of Flame boosts Flame Shock, Fire Nova and Lava Burst, and Elemental Reach adds range (+6 yd on Fire Nova and Lava Burst, +15 yd on Flame Shock).
  • Improved Fire Nova replaces Improved Fire Totems. Elemental Devastation moved to row 2 to tempt Enhancement. Concussion no longer affects Frost or Flame Shock.
  • Removed: Elemental Mastery. Blizzard says it couldn’t raise Elemental’s PvE damage with it in the game without it becoming too strong in PvP.

Enhancement

The melee spec, and the usual leveling choice.

  • Maelstrom Weapon (row 6): melee hits stack charges that shorten Lightning Bolt’s cast time, up to instant.
  • Rage of the Farseer (31-point): +30% attack speed for 25 s, 3 minute cooldown. Inspired by Heroism and Bloodlust, but personal.
  • Stormstrike is now the 16-point talent. 8 s cooldown (was 20), and +20% to your next Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning or Earth Shock.
  • Shamanistic Focus (11-point): much cheaper Shocks and Lightning Shield.
  • Mental Dexterity gives attack power from Intellect, and Mental Quickness gives spell damage and healing from Intellect.
  • Improved Ghost Wolf: rank 1 is usable indoors with a 1 s shorter cast, and rank 2 is instant.
  • Spirit Weapons (was Parry): less threat normally, more with Rockbiter, which suits a temporary tank. guide sites report Enhancement can tank dungeons.
  • Thundering Strikes gives crit to all spells and attacks. Flurry is 5% per point up to 25%. Anticipation doubles dodge, and Toughness is now a % of Stamina.
  • Removed: Shield Specialization. Baseline now: Enhancing Totems, Two-Handed Axes and Maces, Weapon Mastery and Improved Weapon Totems.

Lightning Shield

Can Shamans dual wield?

foreverguide.eu says Shamans can no longer dual wield and use two-handers only. Blizzard’s deep dive doesn’t say so, and the class page still lists daggers and fist weapons. Treat this as reported by guide sites, not confirmed.

Restoration

The healer.

  • Riptide (31-point): an instant heal plus a heal over 15 s, and +25% Chain Heal on that target. 6 s cooldown.
  • Water Shield (11-point): a new shield whose three globes restore mana when you’re hit or land a healing crit. Only one shield at a time.
  • Mindfulness (row 2): Spirit regeneration while casting.
  • Mana Tide Totem is now the 16-point talent.
  • Restorative Totems doubles its Healing Stream bonus, and Healing Way is redesigned for a bigger Healing Wave.
  • Totemic Focus also discounts Totemic Projection and the Call spells. Natural Grace (was Healing Grace) reduces threat of all spells.
  • Removed: Nature’s Guidance.
  • The 8 October notes fixed Water Shield’s tooltip and removed a wrongly displayed 15 s cooldown.

Leveling a Shaman

Level as Enhancement. Our best leveling classes list rates Shaman “Strong”, thanks to self-heals and one-cast totems.

  • Totem quests (foreverguide): earth at level 4, fire at 10 and water at 20. The water chain is long and crosses several zones, so get Ghost Wolf first.
  • Level 30: a Shaman-only quest chain rewards weapons. See the level 30 Shaman weapon quest.
  • Professions: Leatherworking and Enchanting (better oils, new totems) are suggested. Enhancement can add Blacksmithing, and Alchemy looks strong. See our professions guide.

Player opinion

These are views from the official forum feedback thread, not Blizzard statements.

  • The totem changes are welcome quality of life, but not the core gameplay some players wanted changed.
  • Elemental “feels disjointed”, neither slow, big Chain Lightning nor fast, Lava Burst style play.
  • Windfury Totem may push Enhancement to give up its own damage to buff the group.
  • Shorter casts with lower coefficients may hurt endgame scaling.
  • Many players are impressed with Forever overall.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Shaman race in WoW Forever?

Orc is the reference pick for Horde Shamans because Blood Fury adds attack power and spell power. Troll, Tauren and Windshaper Skyborne are close behind, and Dwarf is the only Alliance option with racials that guide sites rate as weak for PvE.

Can Alliance play Shaman in WoW Forever?

Yes. Dwarf is a new Alliance Shaman race in WoW Forever, and it is the only Alliance one. Horde Shamans can be Orc, Tauren, Troll or Windshaper Skyborne.

What is the best Shaman spec for leveling in WoW Forever?

Enhancement is the usual leveling spec. Melee hits build Maelstrom Weapon charges for faster Lightning Bolts, and guide sites report it can also tank dungeons.

Does Shaman have Lava Burst and Riptide in WoW Forever?

Yes. Lava Burst is a 31-point Elemental talent and Riptide is a 31-point Restoration talent.

Can Shamans dual wield in WoW Forever?

Unconfirmed. Guide sites report Shamans can no longer dual wield and use two-handers instead, but Blizzard's deep dive doesn't say this and the class page still lists daggers and fist weapons.

What changed with Shaman totems in WoW Forever?

All totems have a 1 second global cooldown, persistent-buff totems last 5 minutes, and a new tracker shows active totems. Call of the Elements at level 20 lets you drop a preset set of four totems in one cast.
