WoW Forever Hunter Guide: Changes, Talents, Pets & Best Builds

By Updated

Hunters have the biggest rework of any class in World of Warcraft: Forever, and they’re the class everyone in the beta is talking about. This guide covers what changed, how the three specs now play, pets, and why the forums think Hunters are overpowered.

Beta information, last checked 6 October 2026. The beta is capped at level 30, so nobody has seen Hunters at 60 yet.

The big changes at a glance

ChangeWhat it means
Aimed Shot baseline at 20Every spec gets it, and it no longer resets your Auto Shot.
Arcane Shot off the Aimed Shot cooldownArcane and Aimed can be used back to back. Multi-Shot now shares Aimed Shot’s cooldown instead.
Traps usable in combat30-second cooldown, with separate cooldowns for Frost and Fire traps. A huge solo and PvP upgrade.
DisengageThreat reduction doubled.
Aspect of the BeastNow also grants melee Attack Power.
Scorpid StingNow reduces the target’s hit chance by 2% instead of Strength/Agility.
PetsPets scale from your gear but no longer get player buffs.

Specs and key talents

Blizzard’s pitch is simple. Beast Mastery is the pet spec, Marksmanship can drop the pet, and Survival fights in melee with traps.

Beast Mastery

  • Summon Hawk (gold medal): deals instant damage and summons a hawk to attack your target for 18 sec. You can have up to 2 hawks at once.
  • Focused Fire: more damage while your pet is active.
  • Deadly Aspects: melee attacks grant attack speed while Aspect of the Beast is active.
  • Unleashed Fury and Ferocity now also buff your hawks.

Marksmanship

  • Lone Wolf (11-point gold medal): +20% damage with all attacks while you have no pet.
  • Trueshot Aura: moved up to the 21-point gold medal.
  • Sniper Shot (31-point gold medal): a 4-second cast on a 15-second cooldown that hits harder than Aimed Shot. It has 45-yard range and extends your next 3 shots by 10 yards.
  • Careful Aim (Attack Power from Intellect), Rapid Killing and Rapid Recuperation are new.

Survival

  • Counterattack: now a 16-point gold medal.
  • Strider Kick (21-point gold medal): instant weapon strike plus 30% movement speed for 3 sec.
  • Lacerating Strikes (31-point gold medal): Mongoose Bite applies a 21-second bleed.
  • Improved Tracking: merges Monster and Humanoid Slaying, and boosts damage to whatever you’re tracking.
  • Predator’s Edge, Expose Prey, Resourcefulness and Survivalist’s Discipline are new.
  • Removed: Wyvern Sting and Killer Instinct.
  • 1 Oct beta tuning: Deflection’s parry reduced to 1/2/3/4/5%, half its old value.

Pets

Every pet family can learn Bite and/or Claw plus Dive or Dash, and each has one signature ability:

FamilySignature ability
Fox (new)Trickster’s Dance: increases dodge and attack speed
WolfFurious Howl: party melee Attack Power
CatProwl: stealth, with a bonus to the next attack
BoarCharge: immobilizes and grants Attack Power
CrocoliskDismember: reduces healing received by 50%
TurtleShell Shield: damage reduction
BearSwipe: hits 3 targets
Bird of PreyMine!: damage and disarm
SpiderWeb: immobilize
WindserpentLightning Breath: 20-yard attack
BatSonic Blast: slows attack and casting speed
Carrion BirdDemoralizing Screech: reduces enemy melee Attack Power
CrabPinch: snare
GorillaThunderstomp: area damage
HyenaTendon Rip: snare and bleed
RaptorSavage Rend: bleed
ScorpidPoison: stacking damage over time
TallstriderDust Cloud: armor reduction

Crocolisk’s healing reduction and Wolf’s Furious Howl look like the standout PvP and group picks.

“Are Hunters overpowered?”

The most active Hunter thread on the official forums is literally titled Hunters overpowered?. Players report Hunters dominating low-level battlegrounds in the level 30 beta. Here’s the context:

  • The bow. The thread centres on Truthseeker’s Bow, a rare bow (46–87 damage, 2.80 speed, +7 Agility, +3 Stamina). It’s a reward choice from the final library-book turn-in (25 books in total, the level 30 step after Greater Friend of the Library), and it’s far better than anything else Hunters can have at 30. The current beta tooltip shows no level requirement, and players expect Blizzard to add one. See our leveling guide for the library-book rewards.
  • Front-loaded talents and stronger pet scaling make Hunters very strong at low level.
  • It’s been this way before. Many replies point out Hunters have always been strongest early, and historically fall off between levels 30 and 40.

There’s been no Blizzard reply in that thread yet. Expect the bow to be adjusted before launch.

Best builds right now

These are community favourites from beta testing, not proven 60 builds.

  • Leveling (10–30): Beast Mastery. Your pet tanks, Deadly Aspects and Focused Fire speed up kills, and Summon Hawk adds burst. The lowest-downtime option.
  • Single-target damage: Lone Wolf Marksmanship. On the official Hunter feedback thread, the 20% bonus is seen as close to mandatory for raw damage. The counter-argument is that pets provide roughly a fifth of a Hunter’s damage, so the trade can be close.
  • AoE and PvP: Survival. In-combat traps, Strider Kick’s mobility and Lacerating Strikes make it the trickiest spec to deal with.

You can plan your points in Wowhead’s Forever talent calculator. See our talent tree guide for the milestone system.
