Azeroth Survivors: A Free Fan-Made WoW Take on Vampire Survivors

By Updated

Azeroth Survivors is a free, fan-made browser game that mixes World of Warcraft with the Vampire Survivors formula. It is not a WoW: Forever feature and not an official Blizzard game. Ssorn played it for around five hours and made a video about it.

How it works

You choose a class, get dropped into a familiar WoW zone and survive increasingly large waves of enemies. Your character attacks automatically while you collect experience, unlock spells and upgrade abilities. A boss turns up every few minutes, and each run lasts less than 20 minutes.

Why Ssorn kept playing

His first run did not win him over. He picked random spells with no synergy and died to the third boss in Elwynn Forest. The hook was the progression:

  • Every run earns experience towards permanent talent points.
  • Defeating a boss gives a chance of equipment that carries over into future attempts.
  • Failing a run still leaves you slightly stronger next time.

His nemesis was Mr. Smite, who killed him four times in a row before he won on the fifth attempt. After that he unlocked Duskwood, then Warsong Gulch, and kept telling himself that one more run was sensible.

Playing with the team

Ssorn then got the rest of Team Overpowered to join him in multiplayer. It went badly: one player died while in the menu, a friend standing near you can resurrect you, and the team did not win that run.

What he’d improve

IssueSsorn’s suggestion
Bosses can be too easy once your character is built up. With maxed-out movement speed he just ran in circles chipping away at the boss.An enrage mechanic or something else that forces you to take risks.
Classes stick closely to their WoW identities.Get weirder, such as a warrior throwing fireballs or a mage backstabbing, with ability combinations that become ridiculous like Vampire Survivors.

His verdict: he came in thinking it was so-so and was still playing five hours later. He credits the creator, Aether, and says the link is in the video description.
