Is WoW Forever a Cozy Game? Fishing, Wandering and Finding Your Own Pace

By Updated

Is World of Warcraft: Forever secretly a cozy game? Ssorn has been playing the beta and makes the case in his latest video. His answer: sometimes. This article is based on the video and Ssorn’s own beta experience, not on any Blizzard statement.

The case for cozy

Ssorn describes logging in to look at the new graphics and ending up following cows through Elwynn Forest and watching the wheat fields of Westfall in the sun. It was, he says, the most fun he’d had in WoW in a long time.

His argument is that cozy games, such as Stardew Valley or Minecraft, tend to be relaxing, feel safe, let you go at your own pace and give you somewhere you enjoy spending time. WoW doesn’t tick every box, but some of it does:

  • A world with identity. Cities like Stormwind have distinct districts, and areas have their own history and atmosphere. Ssorn says Azeroth feels like a place, not a list of quest hubs.
  • Quiet activities. Fishing, herb gathering, mining, working on professions, selling junk and repairing gear can make a relaxing evening when you don’t want another challenge.
  • Other people. Strangers passing on the road, traders in town, and the occasional buff or wave make the world feel lived in.
  • Helping for its own sake. Ssorn recently spent a few hours tanking random groups in Ragefire Chasm, with no need for the gear or the minimal XP, because he fancied helping.

The case against

Ssorn is clear that Forever is not always forgiving, especially while levelling:

  • Pulling a second mob into a fight can end in a corpse run.
  • On a PvP server, a much higher-level player can ruin a quiet quest session.
  • Dungeons bring the pressure of not letting your group down, and a bad pull or an out-of-control pet can wipe everyone.

For some players, he notes, that danger is part of the appeal, because overcoming it feels earned.

Are we the problem?

His most pointed argument is that much of the pressure is self-inflicted. Tier lists, best-race and best-talent research and the fastest levelling routes can turn a new character into a second job. Nothing forces you to play that way, and you can happily spend an evening chatting in Stormwind.

Ssorn also says Blizzard has talked about the importance of social experiences, an approachable and familiar game, the world as a central part of the experience, and putting the journey before the destination. We haven’t verified those principles against a Blizzard source here, so treat that as Ssorn’s summary of what he’s heard. For Blizzard’s own words, see What Is WoW Forever?.

Verdict

Ssorn’s conclusion is that there’s a difference between a cozy game and a game that can give you a cozy experience. Forever isn’t always relaxing, but it gives you a large, familiar world and lets you decide how to play it.

His question for you: do you find Forever cozy, and where is your favourite place in Azeroth to switch off? Tell us in the comments on the video.
