realm-of-mad-god-screenieIn my personal opinion, F2P games are the future of gaming. Build a great game, get people involved and enjoying the game so much that they will want to purchase extras for the game. This type of business model for games is great for everyone involved. I want a game that has been built to be amazing, not to be sold, create an amazing game and I will make purchases regularly I can guarantee it. Why would I not buy more stuff for a game I love? It just makes sense to build games in this way.

The developers also continue to make money from the games rather than having the one off guaranteed purchase from launch.

So bearing in mind that free to play is the future of gaming, let’s take a look at what free to play games there is available for you to play right now.

Games That Cost Nothing To Have The Full Experience

Realm Of The Mad God?!?!?!?These types of game are games that require absolutely no money what so ever, except for an internet connection and a computer. These games may have in app purchases, but you can experience pretty much all of the gameplay. The majority of the purchases are either cosmetic changes or speed boosters.

League Of Legends

LoL is currently one of the most popular games, if not the most popular. It is a MOBA style game, with three lanes that have minions move down each lane and meet in the middle. You play a champion and try to destroy the enemy nexus. If you want to learn more about LoL then check out the guides section above.

Perfect World

Perfect world is an MMORPG, it is a great game with huge potential that people just haven’t fully tapped into yet, if you haven’t tried this game then definitely check it out.

Quake Live

Quake Live is one of the few FPS games that I know about, which you don’t have to shell out for. It is a great FPS with great multiplayer features.

BrowserQuest

BrowserQuest was built by the same people who built Firefox, it is a great game, although it is a little short, try it out for some quick fun.

Tiny Tower

This is a cool little hotel type game on the mobile, have a look and see what you think of the game.

Realm Of The Mad God

Realm of the Mad god is not for everyone… it is an MMO with some very awesome graphics, I can’t really do it justice with words so check out the picture just over there (points, you’ll know which one I mean).

Initial Purchase Only (MMORPG’s)

guild-wars-2-tournament-armor-setsGuild Wars 2Free to play games after initial purchase effectively means, you buy the game and then what would normally be a subscription (generally because it is an MMORPG) is free and not paid. This may make sense to some people and some people might just think, well that’s not free then? The initial purchase is not free, but the subscription is free.

Guild Wars 2

Guild Wars 2 is an excellent game, it is an MMORPG and they do not fund the game with a recurring subscription unlike, World of Warcraft or Star Wars The Old Republic (originally). It can be difficult to get started with GW2, but check out our Guild Wars 2 beginners guide for a helping hand.

Lord Of The Rings Online

Unlike Guild Wars 2, Lord of the Rings Online was originally subscription based and then they moved to the free to play model, it is a great game with amazing lore for LOTR fans.

Everquest 2

Everquest is another MMO which was originally subscription based. Along with LOTR is has moved to the free to play model allowing gamers to make the initial purchase and then enjoy without having a monthly payment. Everquest is one of the classic MMORPG’s and has some great mechanics which in a way made the standard for current MMO’s.

Age of Conan

Age of Conan has also gone free to play, allowing gamers hours and hours of fun after the initial purchase. The game tails off a little after level 20, but it is a great game up until then.

Dungeons & Dragons Online

This has been one of my favourite MMO’s since Everquest 2 has come out, it is a great game and definitely worth playing, I’m not sure why I don’t play it more really.

Limited Free To Play (Trial Versions)

mantidThese games allow trial up to a certain level or allow you to experience the game for a certain amount of time. I have added SWTOR into this list because in my opinion it is not free to play as you are heavily restricted on what you can do with your time on there. If you disagree with this decision then let me know, also check out what you are actually restricted on for SWTOR as you might be suprised at what little you get in free to play.

World Of Warcraft

The gaming behemoth that is World of Warcraft has always been subscription based and probably will be for a long time to come. They do offer a free trial account which you can enjoy a lot of the different aspects of the game, check it out, it’s still a great game. If you do try it out, then don’t forget to check out some of our wow guides.

Star Wars The Old Republic

SWTOR has apparently moved to free to play, but when you look at how much restriction there is in the free to play account compared to the subscriber account I would disagree. I can play absolutely anything I want on League of Legends, the only items that you have to pay money for is different cosmetic looks for your champion.

Rift

Rift has a free trial account you can use before making your purchase, this is a difficult game to place because it does have a light version, but in my opinion to fully experience the game you do have to pay the subscription for it.

So there you have, quite a large list of free games you can start playing and really enjoy. If you have any specific games you would like added to the list then let us know and we will see what we can do.
